Who Do We Serve and What Do We Do?
The boundaries of the Upper Tweed Community Council run from the southern edge of Scottish Borders Council, about 10 miles north of Moffat to just north of Broughton. To the west it goes to the outskirts of Biggar and to Drumelzier in the east. It is therefore a lare area with a small population. There are 10 Community Councillors, 6 from Broughton and 2 each from Tweedsmuir and Drumelzier. The local Scottish Borders Councillor attends meetings regularly, which makes for good communication.
Meetings are held in the 3 village halls on a rotational basis on the 3rd. Monday of each month at 7.30pm. The exception is December when the AGM is held on the 2nd. Monday. One of our main functions is to comment on planning applications and plans are available to view before the meeting.
Our meetings are open to the public and there are usually some members of the public at most of the meetings.
Our Remit
The Community Council is a voluntary organisation set up under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 which provides for a "Community Counci l ... to ascertain, co-ordinate and express ... the views of the community ... and to take such action in the interests of the community as appears ... expedient and practicable."And so o ur primary role is to consult with and represent our community and make known to the Regional Council and other public bodies the views of local people. These bodies have a duty to consult with us on the delivery of services.
We also have the statutory right to be consulted on any planning applications in our area and so we monitor applications and, as we see fit, suggest amendments or make objections.
